The Three Cups Hotel

Campaigning for preservation of the hotel where J.R.R. Tolkien stayed and gained inspiration for his mythology. Jane Austen, G.K. Chesterton, Tennyson and H.W. Longfellow were also guests. The hotel featured in the film, “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”. Please send articles to me, Andrew Townsend, at afmt@btinternet.com or add a comment. Thanks to David Moss for all his work. Comments are closed at WDDC for the plans to redevelop the site but you can still write to the papers.

Wordsworth Trust as an example

I do not think that it is innappropriate for me to glean another idea from the obituary pages of a daily newspaper. Such tributes to great people of the past are very much the stuff of myths and Tolkien's writings. And in thinking about ways of preserving The Three Cups as it was when Tolkien stayed there, we are seeking to preserve something of his memory and of other artists connected with the building.

My attention was drawn to the Wordsworth Trust by the obituary for Robert Woof in the Daily Telegraph of 10th November 2005 which describes work he did in helping to set up the Wordworth Museum near Dove Cottage. Much opposition had to be overcome but the result was "one of the best literary museums in the world and a centre for serious research, scholarship and conservation". I hope that one day the same will be said of the Three Cups Hotel.
