In the footsteps of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis
The Ramblers Association is encouraging families to explore the countryside as a more economical and healthier way of entertaining children over the half term holidays as reported by Sarah Womack on 24/05/2006. Rambling along the Dorset coast can expand the mind as well as strengthen the body.
The Dorset coast forms most of England's first Natural World Heritage Site, chosen for its important geology. Lyme Regis has many cultural associations to provide other intellectual interest.
Tolkien and Lewis were keen ramblers and the countryside they enjoyed inspired much of their writings. Tolkien spent several holidays in Lyme Regis staying at the Three Cups Hotel. If any young fans of the Lord of the Rings books would like to explore a "Shire" which Tolkien loved or even see a "Grey Haven", they would do well to explore Lyme Regis and the surrounding area. However, the experience would be more complete and memorable if, at the end of a day's rambling, one could rest and take refreshment in the same jolly old inn where Tollers himself stayed.
