Save The Three Cups Hotel

The Three Cups Hotel

Campaigning for preservation of the hotel where J.R.R. Tolkien stayed and gained inspiration for his mythology. Jane Austen, G.K. Chesterton, Tennyson and H.W. Longfellow were also guests. The hotel featured in the film, “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”. Please send articles to me, Andrew Townsend, at afmt@btinternet.com or add a comment. Thanks to David Moss for all his work. Comments are closed at WDDC for the plans to redevelop the site but you can still write to the papers.

Tolkien's View

When Tolkien stayed at The Three Cups Hotel, he sketched a view from which appears in the book "J.R.R. Tolkien, Artist and Illustrator". This photograph shows the modern day view from the back of the hotel. Tolkien made the sketch from the drawing room of the hotel. Wouldn't it be great if the hotel were reopened so that anyone interested in Tolkien's works could look at the haven of Lyme Regis harbour which he found so inspiring from the room where he sat?

My 1st cousin 4 times removed Maria Chedd Garrod was proprietor of the Three Cups Hotel in Lyme Regis 1901-1911 when Tolkien stayed there & would have entertained him. I am interested in the preservation as well as any existing photos of the hotel and the view which Tolkien illustrated from the hotel also for my genealogy info. I would hope at some time that I could visit the hotel in the future and it seems that such a famous author having woven a famous tale from this hotel should be enough for it to remain. I invite anyone else with stories connected to the hotel or Maria Chedd Garrod to email me and your site. I would love to be updated on the condition of the hotel also. Email Shelley Purdon pshelly@telus.net in BC, Canada.
Thank You
