Reaction from Campaign Group
The Save The Three Cups as a HOTEL action group have given their response to Palmer's consultants report on their website, www.savethethreecupshotel.co.uk.
For my own part, I would like to add a few comments to my earlier ones regarding this report:
- the answer you get depends on the question you ask
- if Palmers don't want The Three Cups to be a hotel again, they should sell it or the District Council should use compulsory purchase to save it for the nation and the cultural tourists from around the world who would come and stay there and
- where there's a will, there's a way.

To Palmer’s credit they have allowed TRi to make the report available online. I have swiftly read it and it seems to me a well-researched, balanced and professional piece of work. They clearly demonstrate that given the type of business model they were asked to look at the Three Cups is not viable. That model however seems to be basically building boutique hotels with borrowed money. So this is equivalent to taking the proposition to the Dragon’s Den and asking is this a good way to get rich? TRi are experts in their business and probably are right a renovated Three Cups would probably make a reasonable running profit but not cover the interest costs of a massive loan for the renovation.
However, that does not take into account any of the other value of the hotel to the town or the possibility of a less nakedly capitalistic approach, aiming to preserve a bit more than the facade of the hotel.

but TRI are in the pockets of Palmers, and furthermore, if you had looked at the so called research that TRI supposedly undertook, you would see many flaws in their raw data which skewed the results in Palmers favour. Not only did they not fully consult valid organizations in Dorset, they failed to understand current market trends and cost analysist within this local area and the fact that the Olympics are on our doorstep, which will be in full swing in a few years time. They also flagrantly lied in regards to staffing and training in the area, moreover, they stated Bournemouth Catering and Hospitality College was closing and would not therefore be able to train any staff in catering or the hospitality service. This is not only slander but a complete lie, Bournemouth College is not closing or reducing its courses in this field and object strongly to TRI Consultants adverse publicity that has no founding. A balanced view and direct straight forward data I would understand but this flagrant flawed data they used is not only rediculous but highlights a flaw in the consultants themselves. No one denies the fact given a free hand the overall costs in redesigning and completing a good class hotel in the 3 Cups of between 13-20 rooms/ suites would cost between £2.5m- £4.5m, the fact that TRI Consultants thought a 4 star boutique hotel would only realise £70 pernight rental is rather obscure, moreover ,they were demonstrating this for 2012. So that alone, if you had bothered to read the raw data and see where it came from should highlight their incompetence and skewed data format, that any one with a brain cell could see. Obviously beyond you.
If TRi are such experts in the hotel business, where do members of their staff stay - in doss houses? They certainly do not appear to know what the going rate for hotel rooms is! They don't even appear to know what an ordinary B & B charges - it's certainly often more than they are quoting for the 3 Cups!
