Wishing Lyme Regis a Prosperous New Year
Greetings from Manchester. I hope that 2013 will be a good year for the people of Lyme Regis. Click on "Read more" below for some ideas about how it could be more profitable.
Like the rest of the country, the town will no doubt be subject to the general economic climate but as a tourist destination the local people will be hoping that their particular attractions will bring more visitors and business over the next 12 months.
With the recent launch of Peter Jackson's first film of The Hobbit, there is every possibility that Tolkien fans from far and wide will make their way to Lyme Regis to see The Three Cups Hotel where the author spent many holidays and to enjoy the countryside and seascapes which inspired him. But how many more would come if the hotel were actually open for business and advertising?
I'm sure most people in Lyme Regis would vote in favour of re-opening The Three Cups as a hotel to attract more tourists if they were given a chance. However, as readers of this blog will know, the hotel is unlikely to reopen unless West Dorset District Council uses its powers of compulsory purchase to transfer the property (at zero net cost or a small profit) to one of several parties interested in running the famous building to provide accommodation for visitors.
Given that WDDC's redevelopment plans in Dorchester with outside big business have not been very successful (see this in the Dorset Echo and this on the BBC), they might consider doing more to represent the people of the county who elected them. Re-establishing an existing business with increased popularity and untapped potential would seem to be a safer proposition.
Such a move could be a vote winner. If that is not of interest to existing councillors, voters may wish to note that there is a more patriotic party gaining momentum which aims to introduce more direct democracy and is more entrepreneurial in spirit. See this and this.

The current planned release date for the third Hobbit film is July 2014. That should give some time for West Dorset District Council to fulfil their obligations to act in the interests of the economic well being of the people of Lyme Regis and surrounding area.
The re-opening of The Three Cups Hotel for visitors would also please the growing number of Tolkien fans. I was recently advised that this blog has been mentioned in a new biography of Tolkien by Colin Duriez, albeit in a footnote (J.R.R. Tolkien: The Making of a Legend. p.222 - footnote 12 for chapter 2). It is already linked to the home page of The Tolkien Society. So a potential clientele around the world is watching and waiting.

Needless to say, advertising the hotel as a location for this famous film could attract more tourists to Lyme Regis, if it were open for business.

Would it be beneficial if reopening of the hotel would be under an LLC? It is much easier to do, actually, it could be filed online.
Paul, Thanks for your comment. I am not in a position to bid to be the landlord myself - I am more of a long suffering prospective customer. There have been a number of expressions of interest from experienced hoteliers who would like to run The Three Cups as a HOTEL. If you would like to join the queue, please contact West Dorset District Council and remind them of their obligations to improve the economic well being of their citizens by using compulsory purchase to acquire the hotel and sell it on at a small profit. This would not only provide a business opportunity for the buyer but bring much needed tourism to Lyme Regis. A motion to this effect was passed at a public meeting on 29th April 2009. As I can see it, it seems like the support group of those who want to push through the re-opening of the hotel is basically based on economic purposes. I've got nothing against the said plan but was just a little bit wondering why now? Considering that Tolkien had been there many times now, they should've realized doing that earlier or so.
I am also hoping that 2013 will be a good one for all of the people involved in the 3 Cups Hotel. I already received some inquiries about hosting a hotel in the 3 Cups.

I wonder if something should be taken into account of the history of the Three Cups Hotel's management. Perhaps there were many entrepreneurs who would wish to take on Three Cups but afraid to do so because of the state of its financial affairs.
Once a brave entrepreneur took on the responsibility of saving and restoring the Three Cups Hotel, it would benefit if he would utilize demand management. It would entail historical analysis of its business processes.
Perhaps if someone would attach a good story to this hotel, something that can be verified historically, popularize it through your website and other social networking sites, soon it would drive interested investors.
Think the issue isn't something new, though I always have a thing for vintage stuff. And the hotel sound like a decades and decades old, I think they should just not sell it or put something in it they should just preserve it, I mean it holds up a lot of memories.
