Save The Three Cups Hotel

The Three Cups Hotel

Campaigning for preservation of the hotel where J.R.R. Tolkien stayed and gained inspiration for his mythology. Jane Austen, G.K. Chesterton, Tennyson and H.W. Longfellow were also guests. The hotel featured in the film, “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”. Please send articles to me, Andrew Townsend, at afmt@btinternet.com or add a comment. Thanks to David Moss for all his work. Comments are closed at WDDC for the plans to redevelop the site but you can still write to the papers.

Thomas Hollis in the News Today

Good old Thomas Hollis, philanthropist and benefactor of Lyme Regis, gets a big mention in today's edition of the View from Lyme Regis. (See page 5.) It seems local councillors have been considering how Lyme's early tourism entrepreneur might be commemorated in the town, as suggested by John Dover and Peter Lacey. Click through for my suggestion.

Whilst not wishing to detract from the ideas reported in the council meeting, I am reproducing a slide below which I prepared for a campaign meeting showing what The Three Cups HOTEL would look like if just some of the famous people connected with the hostelry were commemorated by heritage plaques. (Click on  the image to see a larger version.)

As you see from my choice of colours, there is an issue of exactly what sort of plaque should be used, given that the most famous residents of The Three Cups did not live at this address but chose to spend their holidays and leisure time there. Some heritage associations choose brown plaque to indicate important historical and cultural connections while others use only blue. See this link to Wikipedia or this for English Heritage.

It is interesting to read what is happening elsewhere and very frustrating. Let's not get held back by arguments about how our cultural heritage should be preserved and commemorated. Let's do something. Thomas Hollis managed to achieve a great deal in his regrettably short life. I hope that local councillors can follow the example of Hollis in tourism development and get something moving before another holiday season passes by.
