Save The Three Cups Hotel

The Three Cups Hotel

Campaigning for preservation of the hotel where J.R.R. Tolkien stayed and gained inspiration for his mythology. Jane Austen, G.K. Chesterton, Tennyson and H.W. Longfellow were also guests. The hotel featured in the film, “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”. Please send articles to me, Andrew Townsend, at afmt@btinternet.com or add a comment. Thanks to David Moss for all his work. Comments are closed at WDDC for the plans to redevelop the site but you can still write to the papers.

Demolition Plans in The Papers

The View From Lyme Regis and The Bridport & Lyme Regis News have printed letters about the plans to demolish The Three Cups Hotel. Click through for more information.

My latest letter to the View From Lyme Regis appeared on page 15 of the 2nd July edition and can be read on line by clicking here.

You will need a printed copy of the Bridport & Lyme Regis News of 3rd July to read my other letter. Their article about the plans can be read by clicking here.

By writing these letters, I was trying to draw the attention of people in West Dorset to the fact that Palmers' plans for The Three Cups Hotel mean that the hotel will be destroyed. The period during which the plans will be considered prior to approval is the last chance to save this precious jewel of international cultural heritage. If you would like to preserve the memory of visits to Lyme Regis by Jane Austen, Tolkien, Chesterton, Belloc, Tennyson, Chaplin, Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep and General Eisenhower, then please take this opportunity to submit your objections to the District Council. Click here for contact details.

Remember that two votes at public meetings on whether The Three Cups should be bought under compulsory purchase by the council to be saved as a hotel were overwhelmingly in favour. See here and here.

Regarding the coverage of events in the above mentioned newspapers, I am disappointed that they did not ask why the Save The Three Cups HOTEL campaign group were pleased with the plans which mean that the building will be demolished and there will be no hotel.
