Cultural Tourism in North Cornwall
I think Lyme Regis could learn a lesson from Port Isaac about exploiting cultural tourism.
I went there earlier this month with members of my family who were keen to visit the location of the Doc Martin TV series. There are plenty of other places in Cornwall I would have happily travelled to but I was outvoted by the fans of television drama.
And we were not the only ones. The place filled up very quickly, much to the chagrin of those in the third car in our group who could not park. It's amazing how many tourists can be attracted by a connection with TV or film drama.
Lyme Regis goes some way to publicising its links with the media industry by mentioning The Cobb in various ways. The Cobb or breakwater features in Jane Austen's Persuasion and John Fowles' French Lieutenant's Woman which is a start but it can be a rather inhospitable place to visit. How much better it would be for Lyme Regis to publicise the more numerous cultural connections which exist with The Three Cups Hotel and reopen the building to provide hospitality and accommodation to tourists from around the world.
